Use when
Designing announcements and consultations; decoding resistance
Status
Does this shrink my standing or expertise?
Certainty
Can I predict my future here?
Autonomy
Do I still have choices?
Relatedness
Is my tribe intact? Who are 'we' now?
Fairness
Is the process and outcome just, and visibly so?
How to use it
The brain treats these five as survival threats, which is why smart people resist sensible change. Design every announcement against the five: what does this do to status, what certainty can we give (including certain dates for more information), what choices remain, what happens to teams, and how will we show fairness. In unionized environments, Fairness and Certainty carry double weight, and consulting the union early is usually a legal duty as well as the fair thing to do.
